A Year of Contemplation

The Philosopher’s School is a Hospital (Day 245)

Today’s theme comes out of Epictetus’ body of work, specifically his Discourses (3.23.30). He compared these two things because even though both are good for you, they both can be, and usually are, painful. Going through the hospital experience usually isn’t “pleasurable”, even though you’re healed.

Of the list of myriad reasons people don’t go to the hospital (#ForProfitMedicineKillsPeople #MakeWellnessGreatAgain), to dodge the pain of the cure shouldn’t be one of them.

Continuing along the hospital analogy, one’s teacher/guide would be one’s doctor. The pain that naturally arises from the ‘curing’ is not personal, and the ‘doctor’ doesn’t cause the pain because they’re malicious or wanting to hurt you. It’s simply part of the cure.

Remember, being cured will not only make you a stronger person, overall, but the process of being cured will, itself, add to your fortitude.

(See y’all tomorrow)

You asked me once about the Midwife, one of the Shining Ones I work with regularly. This post is basically the domain of the Midwife in a nutshell: sometimes, it has to hurt if it's to heal, and multiple Virtues are required to both accept and properly provide that kind of healing. Yeah... that's the Midwife.
