During this time when the nights begin to slowly grow shorter, we honor the Winter Goddess who revels in the return of the Sun. As the Sun’s rays free the waters from the ground, allowing them to rise into the skies, the Winter Goddess creates snow once more with which she blankets the Earth to store our water until spring when the Earth Mother wakes from her slumber. Goddesses honored during this time include Skadhi and An Cailleach.

Etin-bride with icy breath,
Who breathes white blankets o’er the fields,

Starry skies reflect your light,
From tundra-fields of sleeping Earth,
Keeping watch o’er all the land,
Who sleeps until her spring rebirth.
