Nights of Yule - 12th Night - Remember the Last Year, and Omens for Next

12/31/2016

On this, the final night of Yule, we celebrate with a Core Order of Ritual, Deity of the Occasion as fitting based on your chosen form of divination. The following charm may either be performed alone just prior to divination or as part of the working of the rite with the divination to be a forecast for the year to come for the collective of folks gathered.

Devotional/Prayer: A Charm of Twelfth Night Blessing and Divination for the Year to Come

For this, light one candle for each line of prayer and then make the offerings when instructed.

With this first flame, we honor our Mothers of Old.
With second flame, our hearth and home.
With flame of three, our land-kin, most fair and free.
With flame of four, men upon our family trees.
Five flames bright, our beloved housewights.
Six flames bright, our Ancestral Guides.
With the seventh flame, the Winter Goddess we hail.
With the eighth flame, the Evergreens prevail.
With flame of nine, our allies be praised.
With flame of ten, to the Gods be our glasses raised.
Eleven flames, bring in the boar.
Twelfth Night’s Flame, completes the lore.
Reflections on the year now past
Inform our paths as we now cast
Our lots to see what the future holds
May our fortunes be foretold!

Cast your divination set or take your annual omen per protocol. Once your reading has been made clear, offering a spirit, food, or incense in thanks.

At midnight, take the Yule log outside and throw it on the fire while bringing next year’s log into the home. If you are not using a Yule Log, you may want to carry out the “old year” with the tea lights on a cookie sheet and “bring in the new year” with a fresh set of tea lights.

Nights of Yule - "Bringing in the Boar"

12/30/2016

Before Christianity took root, the Romans held a festival in which a roasted boar was served as a symbol of the human triumph over the “beasts” who stood to cause harm. The boar was sovereign to the land, and because it was so territorial, it was a dangerous nuisance to those who ventured into the forest for hunting. In our modern times, we do not wish to celebrate our dominion over any living thing, but we do wish to honor our own internal triumphs as we have overcome the “beasts” that have stood in our way over the course of our lives. It is common to also honor spirits of divine strength and beings who hold dominion over the wild world. Typical offerings would include those made to Freyr and Freyja, Pan, Cernunnos, or even The Wild Hunt. Folks of a Norse persuasion sometimes view this night as the end of Odin’s Wild Hunt (for more information, please visit: http://norse-mythology.org/the-wild-hunt/). Please consider carefully to whom you wish to honor and what that means in terms of relationship-building.

Devotional/Prayer: Beings of Creativity

Light eleven candles and speak the following:

On this, the eleventh night of Yule,
We pay honor to those who aid us in our endeavors.
As we seek to create, to bring into life new works of art, of song, of speech, of kitchen craft,
We make offerings to you.
Inspire our minds with plans for our works.
Plant songs and poems in our hearts to take root.
Grant us ideas for writing, for speaking, for building.
Guide our senses to new tastes and scents,
And open our hearts to share what we have created
That we may bring joy to others through the work of our hands.
Hail to thee, bringers of Inspiration!
Hail to thee, guiders of intellect!
Hail to thee, whose strength and dexterity blesses our hands.
Beings of Creativity, we honor you.
Beings of Creativity, accept our offerings.
(offer spirits, incense, and/or bread)

Nights of Yule - The Shining Ones

12/29/2016

On this tenth night of Yule, we honor the Gods and Goddesses in their entirety. The Theoi, the Aesir and Vanir, the Tuatha De Danann, the Shining Ones on High. Offerings include spirits, rich foods, oils, and incense. Typical choices are made based on aromatic qualities and/or smoke.

Devotional/Prayer: The Shining Ones

Light ten candles and speak the following:

On this, the tenth night of Yule, we pay honor to the Gods.
To the Shining Ones!
Noble Gods and Goddesses!
First Children of the Mother!
Praise and Honor be yours!
You have offered us knowledge when we were without wisdom.
You have offered us vision when we were blind to our paths.
You have offered us healing when we were broken and bruised.
You have offered us grace when we were troubled within ourselves.
We bring you these offerings of (incense and oil).
We bring you these offerings of (spirits and grain).
May the gifts we give honor the gifts we have been given.
Shining Ones, accept our offerings!

    About the Name: Prairie Tidings

One of the many names for a group of Magpies is "a tiding" of magpies. In 2015 this blog was used as a place for Rev. William, and Rev. Missy to share their experiences as church leaders, as well as goings on at the grove, opinions, and essays. After we got some dedicants trained in our unique work, it was unanimously decided by our board of directors to open the blog to all members of our church. So, we're a group of "MAGpies" (a tiding) sharing news, happenings, and our thoughts (tidings) with you all.

Thank you all for your continued support and interest in our work!

MAGpies, please make all blog submissions to Rev. William, as he's managing the website.
