Honor the Dead, Stand Up for the Living

3/14/2017

I grew up in a pretty diverse place, and yet, Louisiana is the place where three transgender women were brutally murdered, two of those women within 48 hours of one another. Their three deaths bring the 2017 total to seven murdered transwomen... specifically, transwomen of color.

Ciara McElveen, New Orleans, Louisiana
Chyna Gibson, New Orleans, Louisiana
Jaquarrius Holland, Monroe, Louisiana
Keke Collier (Tiara Richmond), Chicago, Illinois
Mesha Caldwell, Canton, Mississippi
Jamie Lee Wounded Arrow, Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Jojo Striker, Toledo, Ohio

Remember their names, and may their memories always be blessings to all who knew them.

To some reading this, my words will seem very far away, very distant from your own experience, as statistically there are more people who believe Elvis Presley is still alive than believe they've met a transperson. As someone with dear friends who are trans, as someone with family members who are trans, and as someone who does everything to oppose dualism and binary thinking, I do not have that luxury, nor would I want it.

With so much pain, confusion, and suffering in 2017, coupled with the polarization of communities, as well as the dissolving of friendships and familial bonds due the, not new, but newly permission-given attitudes of polarized division, unashamed bigotry, and overt racism, I would like to reaffirm mine and our grove's commitment to inclusivity, understanding, diversity, tolerance, and sacred hospitality, as well as standing up against individuals and groups who would perpetuate fear, division, and hate.

Who will make this commitment with me?

Will it be you?

Gods be good, it will.

You have my support and love. Hating humans is heinous. We are the way we are. No one can say we are not human. All humans need room to be and deserve respect. Transgendered people deserve respect too. Thanks for being clear and inclusive.

    About the Name: Prairie Tidings

One of the many names for a group of Magpies is "a tiding" of magpies. In 2015 this blog was used as a place for Rev. William, and Rev. Missy to share their experiences as church leaders, as well as goings on at the grove, opinions, and essays. After we got some dedicants trained in our unique work, it was unanimously decided by our board of directors to open the blog to all members of our church. So, we're a group of "MAGpies" (a tiding) sharing news, happenings, and our thoughts (tidings) with you all.

Thank you all for your continued support and interest in our work!

MAGpies, please make all blog submissions to Rev. William, as he's managing the website.
